Toyota Corolla 86

Toyota Corolla 86

The Corolla 86 has strong heritage coming from the Toyota Corolla AE86 and having the same configuration of a front mounted engine and rear wheel drive setup. The car is called Corolla 86 or Hachi-Roku in japan meaning eight six in japanese, the same as its predecessor, as covered here.

The Corolla 86 was first manufactured in 2012 and is still been produced as of 2016 anyway. The new Corolla has many different names for different continents. its called the Corolla 86 in japan, the GT 86 in Europe and Scoin FR-S in America.

The Corolla 86 has a Subaru 2000cc naturally aspirated Boxer engine that produces 200bhp to the rear wheels. Many people were disappointed that Toyota did not produce a turbo version of the 86 and they were of the opinion that the corolla was underpowered for todays standard of modern cars but 200bhp in a RWD car is still good fun and many Japanese car tuners have produced fine examples of highly tuned drift and drag cars.

The Corolla 86 has won many awards for its motoring finesse after it unveiling but many critics have pointed out that it’s too expensive for such an underpowered car. Personally speaking I think the car looks good but I hate the wheels it comes with as standard, they look tacky and cheap. The new Corolla 86 are an expensive car and for the purchase price of a new Corolla 86, I would rather import a JDM monster that would make me smile every time I see it. After saying that the JDM Corolla 86 prices are getting affordable with even kitted and supercharged machines starting to come into a reasonable price range.

Corolla 86 for sale in Japan

This white Corolla 86 is a 2012 with only 19,000kms for sale for $25,000 in Japan, here. The car’s engine  specification has got a Cusco supercharger with no mention of the additional BHP. The chassis has aftermarket Cusco coilovers and strut braces and the exteriors got nice and subtle TRD Aero lips and a TRD exhaust system. The interior is perfect with an immaculate set of Bride blue recliner seats that are a perfect addition to the car and one small AEM boost gauge incorporated into a vent.

Below is a wide arched 86 for sale by FUJI Cars Japan they have an unbelievable selection of JDM cars, if there was a JDM car showroom like this in my country i’d buy a house beside it just to give my broadband a break.

Anyway, the car is a 2012, with an automatic gearbox and only 56,000kms with a price tag of $15,000. The car has a wide arch Origin fender kit that is nearly $1000 just to buy, 18 inch alloys that just about fill in the extra width in the front fenders and tein coilovers. This Corolla 86 pulls off the look in the pictures but in real life i think it might look a little out of place, I still wouldn’t say no to a test drive.

Black Corolla 86

The Black GT86 Corolla is for sale for $22,500, it’s a 2012 version with a manual gearbox and an astonishing 10,000 kms, wow thats truly shockingly low. The car’s owner has good taste in aftermarket parts, its got TE37SL alloys which just sit perfectly under the Corolla 86 with the help of N1 coilovers and TRD splitters to finish the exterior perfectly.

Toyota Corolla 86 GT 14R60 TRD special

TRD have made a limited run of a special model of the Corolla 86, the TRD version of the Corolla 86 is called the 14R60 and is modified by Techno craft under the TRD name. There was only 100 produced and 2 have already been sold at auction but unfortunately they were sold for an undisclosed sum. These cars were $60,000 to purchase new from TRD and have a massive amount of aftermarket parts. The two Corolla 86 14R60 were basically brand new with very small kilometers on the clocks.  The 86 14R60 is a stunning car but for $60,000, I think i would like an extra couple of BHP than the standard Corolla 86 but I have to admit they look amazing for a new car.
